Mt. Biking: North Downs Wind Direction: NE? Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Muddy Air Temperature: Parky Sea Temperature: Too parky Weather: Cold, clear. Max Speed: 25 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 20 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Borrowed a Marin Mount Vision for a test drive over this weekend. Got the
bib tights out for the first time in several years and set off along the
North Downs Way to give the bike a solid try out. I'd tried the Spesh
Stumpy 120 a few weeks back but conditions then were dry. Today was super
gloopy after the freeze so I stuck to the firmer routes along the top. At
first I wasn't so impressed with the bike but after a while I got to like
it more and more. Not as plush as the Spesh but with more feedback. All
that light weight stuff like a carbon seatpost was a waste of time as by
the time I'd gone a mile I'd gained about 3 pounds of mud. But with disc
brakes who cares. Just keep pedalling through all the mud and puddles. The
tires did a good job of maintaining grip as I took to the ridges on the
side of the track in order to bypass the sludge.
On the way back I decided to give the suspension a good workout by going
down the super-rutted track from Newlands Corner. Even with a modest 100mm
of travel it went down a treat - something I'm nervous about on my
hardtail.
When I got back I was almost too tired to wash the bike down but I had to
as it is due in the shop tomorrow morning. And the cold water really
reminded me why I'm not windsurfing at this time of year. I got some funny
looks coming back with mud all over both bike and rider. Marvellous. Well
worth it. I think I prefer the plush ride of the Stumpy though.
